Rebecca M. Robinson and Stephen E. Strom will present stories and photographs from their book, Voices from Bears Ears. Robinson captures the conflicting and passionate stances on the struggle over the Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah. In 2017, President Trump shrank this monument by 85% from the original 1.35 million acres of public land that President Obama had designated in 2016.
Through the stories of twenty individuals, and informed by interviews with more than seventy people, Robinson interweaves the narratives of Indigenous people who are working to protect ancestral lands and culture with those of Mormon locals whose heritage has devoted them to the land as well. All of this is illuminated by gorgeous photography of the landscape by Stephen E. Strom, who has photographed Bears Ears for many years.
