Author Event: The Sunriver Murders by Ted Haynes

Ted Haynes, popular local author of the Northwest Murder Mystery Series, returns with his fifth book: The Sunriver Murders! Join him to talk about his new book, writing in the mystery genre, and setting stories in his own backyard.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Detective Carl Breuninger, tough-looking but insightful, is called to the scene of the death by shotgun of Geoff Pennstead in the middle of a quiet road in the resort community of Sunriver, Oregon. Leon Martinez, retired art teacher, arrives and takes the opportunity to paint the crime scene. He obtains a critical piece of evidence that neither he nor Carl realizes he has.

The crime was either witnessed or committed (we don’t know which) by Dylan Crabtree, a parolee from the State of Washington who will go back to prison if he leaves the state. He manages to escape Sunriver and return to Seattle, apparently undetected Geoff Pennstead was carrying cash to prevent a bank from foreclosing on a property he owned. He obtained the cash illegally and dangerously. Carl rushes to investigate Geoff’s movements and to protect Geoff’s younger wife, Dara, from criminals who may believe she now has the cash.

An anti-social teenager, Tommy, retrieves a pistol from the crime scene before Carl arrives and uses it in a failed attempt at a mass shooting. Still frustrated, Tommy starts a forest fire that threatens all of Sunriver.

In the midst of the fire, a man arrives to threaten Dara, her lover, and the family of Leon Martinez.

The characters visit the Cascade Lakes for a swimming race and many locations in Sunriver: the airport, the Deschutes River, golf courses, the resort lodge, luxurious homes, and the rural Sunriver Mall. They witness a massive fire which some fight and others struggle to escape. Scenes of violence and sex are limited.

Ted Haynes is the author of both history and fiction set in Central Oregon, including four earlier mysteries in the Northwest Murder Mystery Series. He and his wife first visited Bend in 1975 and have a home on the Little Deschutes River near Sunriver. Ted is a fisherman, kayaker, and competitive master swimmer. He has studied fiction writing with Hilary Jordan, Lynn Stegner, and Nancy Packer. He is a member of Mystery Writers of America and a founding board member of the Waterston Prize for Desert Writing.
